If you want to see Belize's wildlife up close and personal, there's no better place than the country's unique zoo. Our Belize Zoo & Monkey Bay Tour will introduce you to many of the creatures that have made Belize a nature-lover's paradise. You'll also have an opportunity to explore the habitat of Belize's Howler Monkeys (aka "baboons") and catch the sights in historical Belize City.
Your tour begins at the Belize Tourism Village, the docking area for all cruise ship tenders. A few steps from your tender, you will meet our team at the Wet Lizard Restaurant and Bar. From there, an air-conditioned passenger van will transport you to the Belize Zoo.
Founded in 1983, the Belize Zoo began as a sort of "retirement home" for wild animals which had been used in the filming of documentaries about the rainforests of Central America. The zoo has since expanded its mission to serve as a sanctuary and rehabilitation center for injured, abused, and orphaned wildlife.
The Belize Zoo sprawls over 29 acres of tropical savanna and boasts more than 125 exhibits of animals native to Belize. Wherever possible, zoo authorities have recreated conditions that mimic the natural habitats of the zoo's residents. With its emphasis on education, the Belize Zoo extends a particular welcome to outside visitors.
After your zoo visit, you'll travel deeper into the rainforest to explore the habitat of Belize's famous Black Howler Monkeys. Referred to locally as "baboons", the howler monkeys are known for their high-pitched howl, which can be heard at least a mile away. They spend most of their time in the treetops of the rainforest, living mainly on leaves and fruit. The howler monkeys share their habitat with a rich variety of other rainforest species, including anteaters, iguanas, foxes, armadillos, parrots, toucans, hummingbirds, and other tropical wildlife. With the help of your guide, you'll learn how to spot some of the many creatures native to Belize.
Your tour concludes with sightseeing of historical Belize City along the drive back to the Tourism Village. Generally overlooked by tourists, Belize City is in fact a bustling, colorful town that features Victorian architecture from the British colonial era. Your guide will be sure to give you an insider's perspective on Belize's distinctive and diverse cultural mix.
Once you reach the Tourism Village, you're welcome to visit the Wet Lizard for a refreshing drink or quick bite. Time permitting, you will be able to browse the local shops before catching your tender back to the ship.
